Monumental exterior plant fresco on the façade of a building – health and laboratory.

In the continuity of our interior decorations, murals, original signage made for the Aural dialysis / hemodialysis centers in Strasbourg and Mulhouse, we projected one of our creations on a building façade. To demonstrate how much, a monumental fresco develops poetic, artistic and poetic meaning. Plants, lilies, grasses, petals, pistils, gold, streams, birds, small squirrels... The giant work starts on a piece of paper in the form of an illustration. Then, it takes shape outdoors. The title of the work: On the Banks of the Ill. Example of presentation by extension of the project already carried out in Mulhouse.

Monumental Art in the Service of Health: The Impact of Colorful Frescoes on the Facades of Hospitals and Care Centers

Hospitals, dialysis centres and other care centres are often perceived as austere, functional and sometimes anxiety-provoking places for patients, their families and even healthcare professionals. Transforming these spaces into welcoming and soothing environments is a major challenge, all the more crucial as it can have a direct impact on the well-being and morale of those who frequent them. One of the most innovative and powerful solutions to humanize these environments is the creation of colorful and monumental frescoes on the facades of healthcare buildings. These large-scale works of art are not just decorative elements; They help make these places more lively, soothing and inspiring. In this article, we’ll explore how these murals can transform indoor and outdoor spaces, and how they make sense of patient and employee experiences.

Humanizing Care Spaces: An Essential Challenge

Healthcare facilities are often perceived as cold and impersonal spaces. The white walls, the endless corridors and the lack of customization reinforce the impression of distance and unease. For patients, who sometimes stay there for several days or weeks, and for staff, who spend a large part of their day there, this atmosphere can become heavy. The integration of monumental frescoes, with their bright colors and varied patterns, radically changes this perception. They humanize spaces by bringing a touch of warmth and life. For example, a mural depicting a scene of nature, calming elements such as water or sky, or abstract patterns that evoke movement and energy, can help create a more serene and positive atmosphere. These images are not only pleasant to look at, but they also have a therapeutic effect, reducing stress and anxiety for patients.

Creating a Welcoming and Calming Environment

The frescoes on the exterior facades of hospitals and care centres play a fundamental role from the first contact with the establishment. A colourful and harmonious mural can make the hospital entrance less intimidating and more welcoming. Patients, who are often apprehensive about their visit or stay, are thus confronted with a positive and reassuring image as soon as they arrive. Indoors, in reception areas, waiting rooms or even in the corridors, frescoes provide a welcome distraction and help create a more calming environment. They reduce the impression of waiting and anxiety, by immersing visitors in a pleasant and comforting visual universe. By providing visual cues, they also help with navigation within the facility, making it easier to move around and reducing the stress of disorientation.

Giving Meaning to Spaces and Experiences

A monumental fresco can also play a powerful symbolic role by giving meaning to the care spaces. For example, a mural of a tree with branches symbolizing growth, renewal, or resilience can inspire patients to find hope and courage in the face of illness. Artwork can tell stories, evoke themes of healing, solidarity or strength, and thus strengthen the morale of patients and families. For health workers, a mural that represents their mission or values can become a real identity landmark. It can remind them of the reasons why they chose this difficult but rewarding profession, and motivate them in their daily work. The murals can thus transform a simple workplace into a space full of meaning and inspiration.

Improving the Well-Being of Healthcare Workers

The well-being of healthcare professionals is a crucial issue for the proper functioning of healthcare facilities. The colourful murals not only benefit the patients, but also the nursing staff. Working in an aesthetically pleasing and stimulating environment can help reduce stress, burnout, and improve the quality of life at work. Murals can also foster a sense of belonging and pride among employees. Knowing that their workplace is a unique space, where art and aesthetics are valued, strengthens the connection with the institution and can increase engagement and motivation. In addition, they become a topic of conversation and sharing, creating moments of conviviality and cohesion between colleagues.

Strengthening the Bond with the Community

The monumental frescoes on the facades of the health facilities also help to strengthen the link between these institutions and the local community. They transform the building into a visual and symbolic landmark for the inhabitants of the district. In addition, by choosing to collaborate with local artists or involving the community in the creative process, care facilities can create a sense of participation and belonging. This can be particularly beneficial in neighbourhoods where the hospital or care centre plays an important social role. A monumental mural then becomes a symbol of the establishment’s presence and commitment to its community, thus strengthening trust and solidarity.

An Approach of Innovation and Modernity

Investing in monumental and colorful murals is also a way for healthcare institutions to show their commitment to innovation and modernity. This demonstrates a desire to think outside the box, to offer a different vision of care, where the human and aesthetic aspect takes its place. This approach can also attract the attention of the media and the general public, reinforcing the positive image of the institution. In addition, some murals can be made with ecological paints or innovative materials, such as paints that purify the air, thus contributing to the improvement of the quality of the establishment’s environment.

More Accessible and Inclusive Care Spaces

Finally, murals can make care spaces more accessible and inclusive. For example, they may incorporate Braille elements or tactile patterns for people with visual impairments, or symbols and colours that are appropriate for the different cultures and sensitivities present in the community. This shows a commitment to creating an environment where everyone feels respected and included, regardless of their needs or background.

A real metamorpho(Z)e!!

The monumental and colourful frescoes on the facades of hospitals, dialysis centres and other care centres are much more than just decorations. They represent a real transformation of healthcare spaces, making them more human, more welcoming and more inspiring. By improving the well-being of patients, giving meaning to the work of caregivers and strengthening ties with the community, they help create care environments where art and healing meet. Adopting this artistic approach means investing in a future where places of care will no longer be perceived as spaces of suffering or fear, but as places of life, hope and beauty. It is an approach that puts people at the heart of architecture and design, and makes each visit a smoother and more positive experience.
